» En 1938, en la India colonial, una ni?e 8 a?se queda viuda la noche de su boda. El destino de la joven Chuyia queda fijado ese mismo d?y tras afeitarle la cabeza, se instala en un ashram para viudas donde podr?enerar a su difunto esposo durante el resto de sus d?. Sin embargo, la encargada de gobernar el lugar obliga a las mujeres m?j?es a prostituirse. Paralelamente, Kalyani, otra de las viudas recluidas en el ashram conoce a un joven muy involucrado con las ideas revolucionarias de Gandhi. La intervenci?e la peque?huyia como mensajera de la pareja har?osible que la dif?l relaci?ntre ambos prospere. "Agua" supone el fin de la trilog?de la directora India Deepa Mehta basada en los elementos, tras "Fuego" y "Tierra". El rodaje, plagado de dificultades en las orillas del Ganges, tuvo que suspenderse a los dos d? de comenzar debido a los disturbios violentos propiciados por grupos fundamentalistas hind?Tras cuatro a?de par?la pel?la retom? vuelo esta vez en localizaciones de Sri Lanka. La ni?rotagonista, Sarala, que debuta con esta pel?la, fue descubierta en un peque?ueblo de la costa sur. En el reparto tambi?figuran Seema Biswas (La reina de los bandidos), Lisa Ray (que repite con la directora tras "Bollywood/Hollywood") y John Abraham, ganador de un concurso nacional de modelos, que interpreta al joven idealista.
